Things You Can Do

Experience the Prairie:

Learn About Prairie Fauna

Spring is a great time to see prairie chickens "booming" or doing their special mating dances at sunrise. Many
organizations do a spring  burn to help the prairie
regenerate. Also, check out the Prairies Forever page called "Creating A Prairie?" for some great book suggestions and links to sites that can help you start your own prairie garden.

TEACHING: CREATE A PRAIRIE SKIT

One way to get students involved in learning about
prairies is to have them develop a skit based on "The Story of the Prairie." After learning about the prairie's history, the students assume prairie characters and act out the story, showing how prairies were formed.
Another fun idea is to demonstrate the importance of the prairie habitat, including how the food chain works in the prairie ecosystem. Each student can make a prop and
represent a character; characters could include glaciers, sun, bison, grasses, flowers, and insects. Create a
playbill to personalize the skit with the students' names.
